Sports
At Papatoetoe Intermediate we have a long and proud history of sporting excellence. We pride ourselves on offering opportunities for all students to participate in a range of sporting codes and to develop their skills, knowledge and understanding of what makes a great sportsperson.
We compete in the Southwest Zone sports cluster against the schools in our area and wider Auckland. We also have established a Sports Academy squad that works over the year towards Sports Camp, which Papatoetoe Intermediate won in 2023 and 2024.
In recent times we have had students represent the school in competitions including club rugby and sailing, our focus is for students to connect with the local sporting clubs and organisations and to build a lifelong positive relationship with being physically active and connected to their community as we know this has huge benefits for the wellbeing of people.
We are always looking for support in sport and welcome the help of whanau and community to help provide opportunities at Papatoetoe Intermediate for our students, if you are interested in getting involved please reach out by contacting the office with your details.
Health & PE
Health:
All students grow their awareness and ability to understand their own wellbeing needs in a holistic way, a focus on Haoura where their mental, social, spiritual and physical wellbeing needs are met to enable our students to reach their personal potential.
P.E:
All students are empowered to learn and engage in meaningful activities that support positive relationships, attitudes and values. A holistic understanding of how to enhance their wellbeing through participation in a range of contexts largely based on movement.
Life Education
Each year the Life Education Classroom will be onsite to provide lessons on ‘Puberty’ and the changes that occur for young people at that time. This learning is provided to our students with their Health teacher present and is covered in 3 lessons with the Life Education tutors, with follow-up lessons using Life Education lesson plan and resources, in Health classes. All lessons align closely to the current Health and Physical Education Curriculum guidelines by the Ministry of Education.
Below is an overview of the 2025 sessions:
Lesson One:
Introduction to Life Education.
- What is Puberty? When does Puberty occur? What does Puberty change?
- Analyse the changes that puberty causes (e.g. growth, hair, hygiene, emotions) for genders, sorting changes which occur into the categories of physical well-being and emotional well-being linking to Hauora.
- Highlight and discuss the need for kindness during this time.
Lesson Two:
- Changes in emotions and feelings and strategies on how to manage these during this time.
- Respect for self and others during puberty.
- Puberty and the impact of online choices.
Lesson Three:
- Inclusivity and puberty
- Resilience during puberty
There is sensitive follow up lessons provided by male staff teachers to male students, and female teachers for female students. Teachers are trained prior to taking lessons. While it is compulsory for schools to deliver the lessons, whanau may opt for their children not to attend.
Sports Academy | Sports Camp
The Sports Academy programme gives students the opportunity to engage in events and activities beyond our normal school P.E. and sports, and culminates in attending ‘Sports Camp’.
School Camp | EOTC Week
At Papatoetoe Intermediate as part of our EOTC programme we run a school camp every ‘even’ year, and in the ‘odd’ year we have an Auckland based EOTC Week.
In 2025 for EOTC Week we had 7 days of exciting activieis and adventures. These fun, active events are designed to challenge, excite and educate our students and to expose them to opportunities that we hope will help them to discover more about themselves and the awesome city we live in. Some of these activities were, Otahuhu Pools, Papatoetoe Pools, Coast to Coast Walk, Okahu Bay – watersports, Sports Spectacular at Kolmar Sports Centre, Beach Trip – Eastern Beach and In-School Activities.
In 2024 we had the school camp in term 4, this was run over the whole week with half of the school attending Monday – Wednesday and the other half of the school attending Wednesday – Friday. Camp has been held in previous years at Ngaruawahia Christian Youth Camp, this is one of the largest camps in New Zealand and specialises in catering for large groups like ours. It is a vastly different setting – it offers a unique and exciting opportunity for our students, it gives them an experience beyond most of their usual environments. It offers a wide range of activities and has lots of space for our groups to explore and experience.
